Classic Drama Goodnight Mr Tom To Play Newport's Dolman Theatre

Newport Playgoers are bringing Goodnight Mr Tom to the Dolman Theatre stage this October. Many will know the original uplifting book by Michelle Magorian, some will recall the TV adaptation starring John Thaw. It tells the story of a sad and damaged evacuee, William, who lands on the doorstep of the reclusive Tom Oakley at the outset of the Second World War. Their relationship blossoms, thanks to patience, Sammy the dog and the friendship and support of the local village and fellow evacuee Zach. All is going well for William until he is called back to London by his mother, with devastating consequences.

Originally conceived as a play for children, David Woods' Olivier-wining adaptation has been delighting audiences of all ages for many years.

Playgoers have two actors from the extremes of age and experience in the two main roles. Richard Dymond has been seen on the Dolman stage for over 40 years. He reckons over 150 productions are under his belt. He is also an award-winning director. “This production promises to be one of my highlights” says Richard, “and it’s been a delight working with my William”

Unusually, William is being played by a girl. Niamh Jones takes on her first role within the Playgoers season, but she is no stranger to the Dolman stage, having appeared several times with Dolman Theatre Works, the junior branch of Playgoers. Niamh is 13 years old and she’s a pupil of Saint Joseph’s high school. When asked what she was most and least looking forward to she said, “working with a fabulous group, and having a short-back-and-sides haircut”

Goodnight Mister Tom runs from Tuesday October 17 to Friday October 20th at 7.15 with a matinee performance only on Saturday October 21st at 2.30.
