St David's Hall Unveil Autumn & Winter Lunchtime Concerts 2018/19 season
Cardiff’s St David’s Hall have unveiled their Autumn & Winter Lunchtime Concerts 2018/19 Season which juxtaposes powerful piano performances with soothing string recitals from some of the most supremely talented soloists, trios, quartets and ensembles around.
Frith Piano Quartet – Tuesday 25 September 2018, 1pm
Starting the season is the Frith Piano Quartet, who deliver breathtaking interpretations of Bridge and Brahms. Since forming in 2000, the group have also specialised in the master works of Dvořák, Fauré and Mozart as well as with lesser known gems from the likes of Frank Bridge, Arthur Bliss and Richard Strauss.
Anne Page – Tuesday 9 October 2018, 1pm
A fortnight later, acclaimed Australian-born organist Anne Page performs a compelling combination of Vierne, Mendelssohn and Bach. This enchanting concert in association with Cardiff Organ Events sees Anne consolidate the glowing reputation she has established across the UK, Europe, USA and Australia at the forefront of the harmonium revival.
Odysseus Piano Trio – Tuesday 13 November 2018, 1pm
The following month marks the return of one of the UK’s most dynamic and distinctive ensembles as the Odysseus Piano Trio explore the rich seam of new music to have emerged from Eastern Europe before touching base on home soil. This performance in association with the Vale of Glamorgan Festival includes a World Premiere of Mihkel Kerem’s Asleep (for Piano & Cello) and Huw Watkins’ formidable Piano Trio.
Ensemble Cymru – Tuesday 20 November 2018, 1pm
Also making their return to the Hall are Ensemble Cymru with a dream of a programme featuring the famous Schubert Octet – a major accomplishment in chamber music that continues to charm music-lovers across the world – alongside John Metcalf’s incredible new work Octet.
Cardiff Metropolitan Cathedral Choir - Tuesday 27 November 2018, 1pm
Then there’s a pair of Christmas concerts guaranteed to get you in the festive spirit. Firstly, Cardiff Metropolitan Cathedral Choir produce plenty of yuletide cheer with a magical medley of traditional carols accompanied by members of the Concert Orchestra of St John’s College led by Director, Jeffrey Howard.
Royal Welsh College Brass Band - Friday 7 December 2018, 1pm
Plus, the Royal Welsh College Brass Band reel off festive favourites for a sing-a-long with the whole family – the perfect escape from the winter weather and Christmas shopping frenzy!
Isata Kanneh-Mason – Tuesday 22 January 2019, 1pm
The New Year brings the hugely promising pianist Isata Kanneh-Mason, who performs Chopin’s Complete Preludes. Isata is currently an undergraduate at the Royal Academy of Music, but has already been awarded the prestigious Sir Elton John Scholarship and performed with him in Los Angeles in 2013.
Sean Shibe – Tuesday 29 January 2019, 1pm
Prodigious guitarist Sean Shibe provides a suitably fitting finale to the Autumn & Winter Lunchtime Concerts 2018/19 Season with a tantalising trio of Villa-Lobos preludes before Bach’s Lute Suite No 2. At the age of 20, Sean became the first guitarist to be selected for the BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artists scheme and the only solo guitarist to be awarded a Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellowship.

I feel in this day and age we need to take every chance to try to let people experience the thrill of live music.”
- All of the Lunchtime Concerts in the Autumn & Winter 2018/19 Season at St David’s Hall are £6 in advance and £7 on the day (concessions are £5 in advance and £6 on the day).
- All concert starts at 1pm and last for approximately one hour (except for Ensemble Cymru on Tuesday 20 November 2018, which will be slightly longer to accommodate John Metcalf’s new work Octet).
