Macbeth – The Directors Cut At Newport Riverfront

This week, Volcano Theatre brings their take on Shakespeare’s pacy, bloody, eloquent tragedy; Macbeth to Newport’s Riverfront Theatre.

Lady Macbeth is portrayed by Glaswegian actress Mairi Phillips, whose irrepressible energy has fizzed through several of Volcano’s recent productions from Chekhov to A Clockwork Orange. Her partner in crime is Welshman Alex Harries, best known as DC Lloyd Elis in the BBC1 drama Hinterland.

Macbeth is directed by Paul Davies, who played the title role in Volcano Theatre’s original production 18 years ago and is Volcano’s co-founder and Artistic Director. The original production subtitled Director’s Cut with choreography by Nigel Charnock and strobe-and-thrash-metal descent into chaos after the murder of Duncan elicited strong responses on every part of the spectrum from awe to outrage. The production subsequently saw the company invited to Canada, Greece, Russia, Spain and Sri Lanka, but banned from Worthing and frowned upon in Newbury.
