CD Review: Michael McGear – Woman (Estoric Recordings)

In the promotional campaign to push Mike McGear’s first solo album in 1972, the tagline “You’ve never heard Michael McGear before and till his album woman, neither had he” was applied. Of course, prior to Woman, McGear was best known as one third of the Liverpool group, The Scaffold and been Beatle Paul’s younger brother.

Enlisting the help of several accomplished musicians including Zoot Money, Ginger Johnson and Brian Auger, there are some strong defined melodies that should have been given more acclaim.

While listeners will recognise the title track from the recent TV series Cradle To Grave, songs such as Roamin’ A Road, Tiger and Sister are almost Beatle-esque (in some cases sounding more like Lennon than McCartney).
