Singer-songwriter Dan Owen stops off at Cardiff’s Clwb Ifor Bach on April 10.
One of the UK’s most promising new voices with his deep, soulful, blues-infected tones, Dan is currently touring in support of his recently released Open Hands and Enemies EP, which entered the Top 40 iTunes Album Chart and No.1 in the Singer/Songwriter Chart upon release. It’s already spawned the critically acclaimed single Moonlight, and the viral hit Made to Love You.
Andy Howells recently put questions to the singer-songwriter
What lead you to becoming a musician?
It wasn’t my first choice of career actually. I started out as an apprentice carpenter but a workshop accident partially blinded me so it didn’t last long. Then I started gigging full time and I haven’t looked back.
Who or what inspires you most?
I tend to find inspiration from all over, whether it’s just from talking to people, travelling, my friend’s lives, a bit of everything. I am quite inspired by other artists, seeing the success of acts that I have met along the way is really encouraging.
You’ve just completed a European tour what was that like for you?
It’s been amazing. It was my first ever headline European tour and to stand on stage at the Paradiso and hear people in a different country singing the songs back at me is a memory I will never forget.
You’re heading out into the UK now and particularly to Cardiff, what can audiences expect from your forthcoming shows?
A mix of slow songs and up beat sing along/clap along sometimes stomping and sometimes more intimate slow songs.
Can you tell us about your latest release Moonlight?
It’s more of a slow song, I always say it has more of an around the campfire sort of campfire sort of feel, it’s all finger picked so it’s quite a soft guitar song but a pretty demanding vocal.
Are there any other releases to come?
Yes! Very soon. News to come!
What do you enjoy listening to?
This changes daily but a few song-writers that I can’t stop listening to at the minute are Jason Isbell, Tallest Man on Earth and Joe Pugg.
How can people find out more about you and your music?
I am pretty active online. You can always get to me through Facebook or Twitter or Instagram.
