Talking Music With Will Joseph Cook

Singer/songwriter Will Joseph Cook plays Cardiff’s Globe tonight as part of his headline tour in support of his newly released album, Sweet Dreamer. Andy Howells recently put questions to him.

How did you first start out in music?
I got into it properly when i started uploading recordings to youtube and soundcloud. The early days for me were very much done online, that’s also how the people i work with picked up on me.

Who or what has inspired you most on your musical journey?
There’s so many artists that have inspired me along the way. That said, one that has been a constant for me is Eels. There’s an honesty to the writing that really grabs me, the lyrics are really fearless.

Can you give us some background about your latest release?
Sweet Dreamer is album I’ve been creating over the past year. It’s mostly very new songs as i wanted the album to be fresh songs but there are two songs on there that i’ve had waiting since i was 15. Ultimately I wanted to write the kind of pop record I’ve been wanting to hear.

Are you enjoying touring?
Of course! the Sweet Dreamer tour is my longest run of dates. It’s also the first headline tour in Europe, which is exciting.

What can people expect from your forthcoming Cardiff gig?
I’ve been working on making the live show more conceptual. the idea being to bring the energy of my music videos into the live show. This will definitely be my best tour yet.

What are you enjoying listening to at the moment?
I really love the new EP from a band called Parcels. Sounds like the love child of Daft Punk and Tame Impala.

What else have you got planned for the rest of the year?
After touring, I’m hitting festival season with a bunch of dates. I’m most looking forward to Secret Garden Party as it’s a festival i first played when i was 16, feels great to be coming back.
