THE Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra will perform an afternoon concert of Russian greats at St David’s Hall on May 14.
Starting at 3.30pm, the masterful Conductor Yuri Simonov will lead the orchestra through a repertoire of romantic fantasy and tragedy, beginning with an early Rimsky-Korsakov rarity with Sadko, which tells the tale of a minstrel who set all the sea creatures dancing.
Soloist Natalia Lomeiko will perform Shostakovich’s First Violin Concerto before the bittersweet joy and heartbreak of Prokofiev’s ballet Romeo and Juliet.
The powerful performance of Russian greats not only forms part of the International Concert Series, but also R17 (which marks the centenary of the Russian Revolution, and captures the social and cultural explosion of the era as well as Wales’ historic connections with Russia).
