Countdown to Newport’s Big Splash Festival 2017

Kicking off the summer holidays, on Saturday July 22 and 23, Newport will be welcoming back the Big Splash festival.

This year’s free family street theatre festival will offer families lots to see and do Newport with a weekend of free family fun from the quietly intriguing to outlandish, there will be performances popping up in the Big Splash zones at The Riverfront Theatre & Arts Centre, Friars Walk, Kingsway Shopping Centre, the Newport NOW zone on High Street/ Commercial Street and the river walkway between the University and the Red Wave creating one large outdoor stage in the city centre.

Performance highlights include If I Could, I would will be presented by Mimbre at Usk Plaza on the Saturday delivering a heart-warming message for everyone about resilience in the face of the everyday grind while Mr and Mr Burn’s Ramshacklicious at John Frost Square on the same day will present music, clowning, puppetry, fire and pyrotechnics combined with a touch of chaos.

Across both days and various venues Taking Flight Theatre Company will present Scenes from a Suitcase, a production inviting lots of fun and audience participation, while on the Sunday, Otto the Otter and Teddy the Fox will wheel a wooden cart through the crowd of the River Walkway. Laden with ancient magic, props and relics from the greatest fairy tales ever to be told, Otto and Teddy invite anyone who wishes to test their knowledge in a quiz of fairy tale fantasy!

As well as performance there will also be a series of family workshops including Samba, Puppet Making, African Drumming Workshop and Storytelling & Badge Making.

Other attractions will include the Defying Gravity Academy will bring John Frost Square and river walkway  to life with dancing, cheerleading and gymnastics on the Saturday and Sunday while The Grand Theatre of Lemmings will present a performance of the classic Sherlock Holmes tale, The Hound of The Baskervilles on the River Walkway on the Sunday.
