Talking Music With Eva Hendricks of Charly Bliss

Comprising Eva Hendricks, Spencer Fox, Sam Hendricks, and Dan Shure, Charly Bliss is a four-piece power pop band from Brooklyn, NY.

The band, formed in 2014 are starting out on their debut UK tour at Clwb Ifor Bach, Cardiff on September 12. Andy Howells chats to guitarist and vocalist Eva Hendricks,

Who is Charly Bliss, how did you all come together?
We’re four childhood friends (and one set of siblings!) who make really loud, fun, pop-y rock music! Sam (our drummer) is my older brother, Dan has been my best friend since I was 12, and he introduced me to Spencer when we were 15 at a Tokyo Police Club concert.

You have an album out; can you tell us a bit about that?
Guppy is our first album and it took us roughly three years to make. We recorded it twice, and ended up rewriting most of it because we wanted it to be perfect. I think our dream was for people to listen to it in their car really loud with the windows down and scream along. I hope we achieved that!

There’s also a new single DQ, can you give us a bit of background as to what it’s about?
DQ is a song in which I’m making fun of myself for being very possessive and needing tons of affection in relationships. It’s also a song about feeling like you’re in between stages of your life . Basically, careening between feeling really mature one second and then making terrible, irresponsible decisions the next.

You’re heading over to the UK and playing Cardiff in Wales next week, Have you visited the UK before and what are you looking forward to the most about visiting the Welsh Capital?
No! We’ve never been to the U.K. before! We are so excited!! We have family friends who live in Wales who we haven’t seen in a very long time and they’re coming to the show. I’ve been seeing pictures of their beautiful house (they have sheep and horses!!) since I was a little kid and we’re so excited to finally get to stay with them!

What can people expect from your show?
Our shows are very energetic and we try to make them as fun as possible.

You’re also working on a comic book – are you all comic fans?
I’m kind of alone in the band with regards to my love of comic books! I became obsessed in the last couple of years. My favourites are Love and Rockets, Savage Dragon, Saga, Paper Girls and A Child’s Life by Phoebe Gloeckner.

Spencer is also the voice of Dash in The Incredibles –does he display any Incredibles super powers within the band?
Ha! We always joke that Spencer is “the muscle” of the band – he’s always the one to make sure we get paid at the end of the night, he isn’t afraid to ask for our buy-out, etc. He’s definitely my own personal hero!

What can we expect from CB in the future?
We wanna take over the world! Currently we are working on our next record! 🙂
