ST DAVID’S HALL is launching an exciting new series which mixes contemporary classical music with cocktails in the L3 Lounge!
NightMusic brings together some of the most exciting and distinctive voices working today and provides a more easy-going way to explore new directions in music. Get ready to revel in thrilling performances from electro-acoustic soloists and convention-flouting ensembles to the best new Welsh music courtesy of Tŷ Cerdd!
This first NightMusic season at the National Concert Hall of Wales features a trio of innovative and experimental contemporary concerts, which are also supported by the Arts Council of Wales, Welsh Government and The National Lottery.
All NightMusic performances take place at 8pm in the intimate setting of the L3 Lounge amid atmospheric lighting and spoken introductions from the performers to open their musical worlds. Every event will be as informal as it is immersive, with plenty of opportunities to talk to the artists between sets.
Starting the season in style is The Hermes Experiment on Tuesday February 13 who are by no means your average quartet. The 2016 Tunnell Trust Award winners and Park Lane Group Young Artists 2015/16 combine harp, clarinet, voice and double bass to produce a stunning sound of off-beat, idiosyncratic possibilities. In this captivating concert, the quartet present their stunning interpretations of Prokofiev, Peter Maxwell Davies and Meredith Monk, as well as a classic from Leonard Bernstein.
Then there’s a dynamic double bill combining incisive percussion and guitar artistry with the Abstruckt Ensemble and the Vickers Bovey Duo on Wednesday April 4. Since graduating from Birmingham Conservatoire and the Royal Academy, Julian Vickers and Dan Bovey have racked up numerous prestigious awards and earned slots on BBC Radio 3’s In Tune and Late Junction. This performance features two major commissions from Joe Cutler and Michael Finnissy, alongside exquisite Baroque pieces by Rameau and smouldering Argentinean tango from Piazzolla.
The season closes with London-based cellist, composer and producer Oliver Coates on Tues May 8, who has performed solo shows in across the UK, China, Russia, Brazil, Egypt, Australia and made his New York debut at Le Poisson Rouge. Plus, Oliver was the worthy winner of the Royal Philharmonic Society Young Artist Award 2011. In the L3 Lounge, he plays a breathtaking new commission from Tŷ Cerdd.
Whilst enjoying NightMusic, there’s also the opportunity to enjoy the brand new and luxurious Gin Lounge on the fourth floor. As an added incentive, the first drink is included within the ticket price!
