Jess Gillam Opens nightmusic Season at St David’s Hall

SENSATIONAL saxophonist Jess Gillam starts the 2018/19 nightmusic season in style at St David’s Hall on Tuesday 9 October.

Jess became the first saxophonist to reach the final of BBC Young Musician of the Year Awards and has already performed alongside the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and BBC Concert Orchestra. She may only be 20 years old, but Jess was the indisputable highlight of the Last Night of the Proms earlier this year. Covered in glitter, the musician gave a sprightly, airborne performance of Milhaud’s Scaramouche that brought the Royal Albert Hall to its feet. This prodigious talent is a persuasive advocate for her instrument’s contemporary classical credentials, and a versatile performer in any genre.

Joining Jess for her debut at the National Concert Hall of Wales is her podcasting companion, pianist Zeynep Ozcusa and bassist Andee Birkett. Together they perform for an eclectic programme that ranges from Michael Nyman and Chick Corea to David Bowie’s Where Are We Now? The programme also features a new Tŷ Cerdd commission, which is the Welsh Premiere of by Three by Gareth Churchill.

nightmusic performances take place within the intimate setting of the L3 Lounge amid atmospheric lighting and spoken introductions to open musical worlds. Every event is as informal as it is immersive with plenty of opportunities to talk to the artists between sets.
