Talking Music: Andy Fairweather Low On The Road With The Low Riders

“I think I confuse them more than anything.” chuckles Andy Fairweather Low, as he discusses his female fan-base who remember him from his pin-up days as front-man for 1960s band, Amen Corner.

The Ystrad Mynach born singer-songwriter can’t help but notice the confusion from some on-lookers who recognise the voice, but not necessarily the man on stage who is now fifty years on the chart-topping days of the 1960s.

Andy continues, “ I do High In The Sky fairly early on in the set and I can see the look on their faces going “is that really him?” Well, yes, it is!”

Andy is currently touring the UK and will be playing several Welsh dates with his band The Low Riders in the next few weeks culminating with a date at Cardiff’s Tramshed on December 9.

Andy came together with The Low Riders over a decade ago and the partnership has been one of the most enduring of his music career as he tells Andy Howells.

“It’s a great band. I’m very lucky. We’re part of a co-operative. We’re all in it together. The road manager gets the same amount of money as I get and that’s the way we make it work. Plus, the fact that they’re fabulous musicians and real good people to spend company with, keeping in mind the amount of hours we are travelling in that van, you’ve got to get on with people!”

Fans can expect to hear a variety of songs from the Fairweather Low back catalogue ifrom Amen Corner classics, Gin House Blues, Bend Me Shape Me and (If Paradise Is) Half As Nice through to solo successes Wide Eyed and Legless, Reggae Song and Andy’s composition Hymn 4 My Soul which was successfully covered by the late Joe Cocker.

“That’s never going out of the set and I love Joe’s version!” reveals Andy, “ I really loved what he (Joe Cocker) did with it. I’m very proud of that and the fact that he covered it.”

“He called his album Hymn 4 My Soul and he called his tour the Hymn 4 My soul tour. That’s about as high as I’m gonna get, I reckon!”
