Talking Music: Darren Parry Discusses Career and Christmas Single On EntsSouthWales Podcast

“I wanted to write a song that was a little more pop and a little more accessible,” Welsh multi-award-winning singer/songwriter, Darren Parry tells Andy Howells about his new Christmas single for 2018, Don’t Need Nothing Else This Christmas.

The song follows the theme of potentially being without the one you love at Christmas and  was recorded at Shabbey Road Road Studios, South Wales and produced by Darren and Al Steele.

Darren reveals to Andy Howells on the latest EntsSouthWales podcast that he had previously co-written a Christmas song several years ago which was focussed on the true meaning of Christmas. This time he wanted to take a different approach.

Darren continues, “Back in May, I thought “I’m going to try and write a Christmas song again”. It came pretty quick and within about an hour I’d written most of the song.”

“Its kind of a feelgood pop song with a tad of country.”

Did Darren have any trouble focussing on recording his Christmas single back in the Summer whilst in the middle of a heatwave?

“I was recording the song on a very hot Caerphilly day in August so that was a bit weird recording it in 25 degrees heat. I was sweating streams in the studio which was a bit odd. “

“You have to tap in to some kind of emotional well really and you have to think about yourself by a log fire with some snow, maybe some mistletoe around it’s not easy!”

To accompany Darren’s new Christmas song, there is also a star-studded video featuring familiar Welsh faces such as stage star; Peter Karrie, singer/songwriter Steve Balsamo and BBC Radio Wales presenter Chris Needs MBE.

Darren continues: “It’s a home-made thing, the video is just put together by me really from mobile phone footage. I hope its an organic kind of thing that people see as a bit of fun”

Darren has previously performed and shared the bill with house-hold names Michael Ball, Bryn Terfel and Donny Osmond and has accolades that include; 2004 UK Song writing Contest winner and 2014 and 2016 and USA Song Of The Year contest runner up for So Into You and Promises.

He is “over the moon” with the responses Don’t Need Nothing Else This Christmas has got since its release in November including airplay in America and Australia.
