The Wonderful World of Disney on Ice returned to Cardiff’s Motorpoint Arena as part of its 2019 world tour on Wednesday evening.
Narrated by Mickey and Minnie Mouse, helped by Goofy and Donald Duck, the audience were guided through ice dance scenes recreating some of the magical moments from Disney movies.
Pre-show, enthusiastic skaters gave us a taste of their Fit to Dance education programme, presenting the Mounce Bounce Dance which had the whole auditorium up on their feet taking part.

The first segment introduced to the audience, The Lion King, is not one of the Disney films that I would expect to see on ice. Rafiki set the scene, standing on Pride Rock in the middle of the arena followed by two enthusiastic skaters as the young Simba and Nala. As the story progresses the skilled skaters appeared as the Wildebeests and a variety of jungle animals with amazing and clever costumes. As you would expect in any presentation of The Lion King, the comedic Timon and Pumba were a highlight here.
Next up, was a surprise appearance of the wonderful Seven Dwarfs skating into the arena. They were joined by Snow White and her Prince Charming.

I loved the Finding Dory segment, as the performers covered the key elements of the film quickly with a few scenes. Through the costumes you are taken on a new ocean adventure as they discover the real meaning of family. The use of fluorescence costumes and set design, paired with the lighting really enhanced the scenes
There was also an appearance of Toy Story favourites, Buzz and Woody who had the audience jumping in a throwdown reminiscent of a song from the Hannah Montana movie.

The big finale was a segment from the movie Frozen. I love the way they moved from Arundel to the icy planes and back again just with a few key elements of set. As the end of the most famous song, Let it Go, banners descended and back up again in one smooth movement, this was very creative.
Overall, Disney On Ice maintains a high standard of skating including jumps for each movie segment and remains an essential Easter treat for all the family.
