THE Welsh Proms returns to St David’s Hall from Saturday July 20 until Saturday July 27, 2019!
Now in its 34th year, the Proms is one of the biggest events in Wales’ cultural calendar and its powerful programme starts in style with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales performing a celebration of the 1969 lunar landings. One Small Step… (Sat 20 July) marks 50 years to the day since man set foot on the moon as Game of Thrones and Line of Duty star, Owen Teale presents a captivating concert featuring Wagner’s Ride of the Valkyries, Holst’s The Planets and Dvořák’s The New World.

Earlier that day, the Tiddly Prom (Sat 20 – Sat 27 July) returns for seven fun-filled performances and this time it’s Bert’s Magical Musical Kitchen! Also introducing young people to the joy of classical music is the Family Prom (Sun 21 July) as Cardiff Philharmonic Orchestra takes this year’s weather-themed event by storm. Expect showers of fun and intermittent spells of laughter including Disney’s Frozen. And who better to present this concert than beloved BBC weather forecasters Derek Brockway and Behnaz Akhgar?
The following day, young Welsh musician Elin Rees performs the Organ Prom (Mon 22 July) with a programme packed with Widor and Bach before a rousing finale of Rossini’s William Tell Overture. Cardiff’s own Capital City Jazz Orchestra then return once again for the Jazz Prom (Mon 22 July) with a helping hand from the stunning vocals of Clare Teal for an evening of the very best Big Band and swing music including Count Basie, Duke Ellington and Cole Porter.

Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra are up next for Classical Extravaganza! (Tues 23 July) featuring some of the greatest composers ever including Brahms, Handel, Verdi, Mozart, Elgar and Tchaikovsky bolstered by the sound of the massed Welsh Proms Festival Chorus and acclaimed organist, Robert Court. He also returns the next night alongside Beverley Humphreys and Conductor Owain Arwel Hughes CBE in Brass, Voices & Organ (Weds 24 July) for rousing renditions of Cwm Rhondda and 633 Squadron.
Then it’s time to enter the weird and wonderful world of The Spooky Men’s Chorale for the Folk Prom (Thurs 25 July). Sounding as sacred as a high church choir one minute and wickedly off the wall the next, these New South Walians are unlike any chorale you’ll ever have heard before! From that manic and mysterious realm, we transition into the glitz and glamour of Hollywood, whilst also celebrating the best of Broadway and the West End in Movies & Musicals (Fri 26 July). Sensational Welsh actress and singer Sophie Evans joins the Welsh National Opera Orchestra for a super selection of theatrical scores and blockbuster soundtracks from Wicked and The Wizard of Oz to Jaws and Star Wars!

The penultimate performance sees The Claire Jones Concert Ensemble (Sat 27 July) deliver a lunchtime concert of Vivaldi, Piazzolla and more of John Williams’ iconic movie music in the L3 Lounge led by the former royal harpist.
As ever, the Last Night of the Welsh Proms (Sat 27 July) brings the curtain down on another spectacular season with all the appropriate Pomp & Circumstance, plus a guest appearance from Welsh tenor and BBC Radio Wales presenter, Wynne Evans!
