Newport author, Jan Preece is the guest on the latest Ents South Wales audio supplement podcast.
Born in Pillgwenlly, Newport, in the late 1940s, the backdrop of terraced streets and the sights and sounds of the dockland area led Jan to develop an unshakeable passion for heritage and the past.
Jan has recently written a series of books for Amberley Publishing. Among them Now That’s What I Call Newport, a book featuring nostalgic images of the people and places in Newport during the 1960s, 70s and 80s and Newport History Tour, a handy guide visiting 50 landmarks around Newport.
Newport pop trio, The Rikki Allen Trio (later The Interns) are discussed and heard on the latest Ents South Wales podcast as well as featured in Amberley Publishing’s book, Now That’s What I Call Newport (Amberley Publishing)
“Pill during the 50s and 60s was the most exciting and vibrant of places,” Jan tells Andy Howells as they discuss Newport’s history, “You had so many innovative things going on around you. No child was bored in Pill those days!”
Over the course of the interview, many people and places which are covered in Jan’s book, Now That’s What I Call Newport are discussed and along the way there are chances to hear songs from some of South Wales music stars who released records in the 60s including Cardiff’s Maureen Evans, Ammanford’s Pat Harris & The Blackjacks, Merthyr Tydfil’s The Bystanders and Newport’s own recording artists, The Interns.
