Glass Ceiling Theatre return to the stage of Newport’s Dolman Theatre this September with their presentation of the musical classic, Thoroughly Modern Millie.
Based on the 1967 film version starring Julie Andrews, Thoroughly Modern Millie tells the story of a small-town girl, Millie Dillmount, who comes to New York City to marry for money instead of love – a thoroughly modern aim in 1922, when women were just entering the workforce. Millie soon begins to take delight in the flapper lifestyle, but problems arise when she checks into a hotel owned by the leader of a white slavery ring in China. Chaos and pandemonium ensue, accompanied by comedic moments, skilful dancing and delightful songs, including ‘Gimme Gimme’, ‘Not for the life of me’, ‘Forget about the boy’ and the breakneck tap number ‘The Speed Test’.
Claire Tucker will be taking to the stage as Millie in Glass Ceiling’s stage presentation. Claire is a BA Hons Musical Theatre graduate and has spent several years working internationally as a vocalist and dancer. Her most recent performance was with TED Talent in Sharm El Sheikh and counts appearances as Janet in The Rock Horror Picture Show and Jo March in Little Women among her theatre credits.
Here, Claire discusses her next on-stage role as Millie Dillmount.
What is the best thing about the show?
Its hilarious! Some great comedic moments. Also, it has catchy songs! I am also looking forward to wearing the fab 20s costumes.

Glass Ceiling Theatre present Thoroughly Modern Millie at Newport’s Dolman Theatre from September 5-7, 2019.
Tell me about your character:
Millie is a lovable, carefree and ‘modern’ young lady wanting to make a life for herself in New York City in the 20s. She is funny, sassy and cheeky and knows precisely how to look after herself. She longs to marry a wealthy husband but is blinkered when true love unsuspectingly finds her. Millie tends to speak a lot before she thinks which adds to the comedic element of her character. She has been an extremely fun character to play!
Sum up the show in three words:
Toe-tapping, exciting, fun
What has been the most Challenging thing about the show for you:
MILLIE in general…she doesn’t stop for the whole show! The harmonies are difficult for the larger choral numbers and this has been quite challenging. Millie’s songs are massive also! Trying to re-gain the stamina to do justice to the dancing and singing together has been challenging!
Why should people come and see the show?
This show is so underrated! It has great numbers, it’s funny, it had all the elements of a traditional Broadway show. GCTs cast are amazing. Come and support the local talent. You will find yourself laughing and singing along all night!
