Talking Music: Rhys Davis of Super Marine Discusses Debut Single, Decadent Flowers

Following the release of their debut single, Decadent Flowers Blackwood based band Super Marine are performing several dates including a hometown single launch at the Blackwood Miners’ Institute tonight (October 5) and a slot at Swn festival in Cardiff on October 19.

Andy Howells recently put questions to vocalist and guitarist Rhys Davis about the band and their new single.

First off, who are Super Marine?

Super Marine are Rhys Davis on Vocals & Guitar, Matt Davies on Guitar, Dan Barrell on Bass and Jay Price on Drums from Blackwood, South Wales.

How and when did you all come together as a band?

Both myself (Rhys) and Jay had been playing together a long time previously, but were looking for people to join a new project. After seeing an ad for a bassist online I gave Dan a ring and found out he literally lived at the bottom of my road and we’d never met! To thicken the sound out we decided to find a second guitarist to complete the line-up, a friend of mine knew Matt and put him our way. The four of us just seemed to click straight away.

Where did the band name come from?

It comes from the name of the company that built the spitfire airplane

Who or what inspires you all when it comes to creating music?

Inspiration comes from loads of places, life experiences, films, dreams and the lives of people around me.

Earlier this year you started work with producer, Rich Jackson. What has the experience been like?

Working with Rich has been amazing, he’s such a professional and is so easy to work with. He really gets the best out of the songs and we’re already looking at working together again soon.

You’ve been busy this putting your debut single together. Can you tell us about the inspiration for Decadent Flowers?

The film “Drive” was the main inspiration behind this song. The song originally shared the same name, but we decided to go with something more interesting. It’s one of my favourite films

You’re going to be playing dates in the coming weeks around South Wales. What can people expect from your sets?

High energy performances with songs you just can’t help but sing along to. We’ve got some great shows coming up so pop along if you can.

You’re also playing Swn Festival, do you like the festival atmosphere?

Love it! Swn is one we’re super excited for. I’ve been a few times just to watch and it’s great, can’t wait!

Who are you listening to when you’re not creating music yourselves?

I can’t speak for the rest of the boys, but I listen to loads of artists. At the moment, I’m listening to U2, Jeff Buckley, The Police, Kings of Leon, Beck and loads more

Where can people keep up with what you are doing?
