Review: Centrestage Cymru’ Sofa Sing Song, Facebook

Members of Newport musical theatre group Centrestage Cymru came together by the miracle of a Facebook Watch Party on Sunday evening. Sofa Sing Song featured the group giving unique performances over social media from their homes via their Facebook Friends Page.

The programme was edited together by Jordan Archer and featured the group led by chairman, Sharon Higgins; performing 21 songs and a sketch (see below for details).

Popular music standards such as Elton John’s Your Song and The Real Thing’s You To Me Are Everything were intermingled with songs from musicals including The Sound of Music, Dear Evan Hansen and Wicked, maintaining a constant flow of stand-out high-quality performances over the programmes 90 minutes.

Sofa Sing Song ended with a poignant message from Centrestage Cymru to their devoted followers as several group members unified over individual video links for a rendition of We’ll Meet Again.

CentreStage Cymru’s latest presentation Saturday Night Fever was due to be presented this spring before UK Government restrictions for COVID19 caused theatres to shut their doors to prevent further spread of the virus. The presentation will now take place at Newport’s Dolman Theatre from October 28th – October 31st, 2020. You can book tickets for the show via the Dolman Theatre website.

A video feed of Centrestage Cymru’s Sofa Sing Song will be available to watch via Centrestage Cymru’s Friends Page on Facebook for a week after broadcast and a second edition is already in the works.

People wishing to donate to Centrestage Cymru to help raise funds for Saturday Night Fever (with a percentage of the funds to be made to The Alzheimer’s Society) can do so by visiting their Just Giving page.
