Ballet Cymru Step Into Summer With Online Dance Events

Ballet Cymru is taking the annual Wales Summer Dance 2020 online, offering fantastic creative and ballet courses from the company’s studio at their Newport, South Wales home base.

Wales Summer Dance 2020

Each course is designed to accommodate a range of levels and experience in ballet, from grade work standard right up to professional level.

Artistic Director Darius James said:

“As it will not be possible to deliver our summer courses at The Riverfront Theatre this year, we are inviting dancers to join us instead on Zoom for an interactive summer intensive with the company dancers, directors and guest teachers including guest choreographer Marcus Jarrell Willis.

“Wales Summer Dance and the Wales International Ballet Summer School offer such popular and unique opportunities we decided to move to online to ensure both young and professional dancers can continue to develop their skills and love of dance.

“We are running these courses through a donation basis. If you can afford to donate, terrific! If not, you are still so welcome to join us on these courses.”

All courses include ballet technique class, ballet repertoire and creative choreography. Some classes, depending on the course, include pointe work, male/female coaching, Pilates and stretching.

There are two Wales Summer Dance ballet courses, one for aged nine plus and one for aged 12 plus. These are led by the professional dancers of Ballet Cymru. There is also the Creative Course 2 which includes guest teachers from around Wales specialising in various dance disciplines. The three courses will run from July 28 to August 1.

Then the Wales International Ballet Summer School, for advanced/ vocational and professional dancers, will run from August 3 to 7. The course will include working with the professional dancers and Artistic Directors of Ballet Cymru and guest teachers, Mara Galeazzi and Sander Blommaert.

Darius added,

“During the Coronavirus-19 pandemic we have been harnessing social media to stay in contact with dance audiences and artists in Wales and further afield including morning tutorials each weekday at 10am where our professional dancers coach you through an exercise a day. We also have interviews, pointe classes, stretching and relaxation and strength exercises to work on those core muscles through isolation. These can be accessed through our website http://www.welshballet.co.uk.”

Ballet Cymru is an inclusive company and welcomes applications from young dancers with disabilities and from protected characteristics.
