Get Inspired For One Act Playwriting Competition

Newport Playgoers Society has launched a new One Act Playwriting Competition.

Following on from previous writing festivals including a successful Shakespeare One Act Festival and Golf One Act plays in celebration of the Ryder Cup in Newport, this festival will showcase the writing talent of three winners whose plays will be performed by the society in their home, the Dolman Theatre Newport, as soon as government restrictions are lifted.

“We are really excited about finding new plays to perform,” explains NPS Secretary Lynn Phillips. “The theme is open but we are asking writers to ensure that all their characters can be socially distanced and the maximum characters we can have is six as we have six dressing rooms in the theatre.”

Winning plays will be performed and produced by the society which entertained over a thousand audience members earlier this year with its productions of Murder on the Nile and The Diary of Anne Frank.

Deadline for Newport Playgoers’ One Act Playwriting Competition is December 7, 2020.

“All of our wonderful actors, directors, set builders and technicians cannot wait to get working on a new production,” says Lynn. “We are all desperate to get the theatre up and running again as soon as it is safe to do so.

“We are looking for 15-40 minute plays that surprise, delight and entertain us and we encourage writers to think of creative ways to tell stories which will incorporate distancing for all actors so that we are able to put on the plays as soon as possible.

“As we are a charity and currently have no income from ticket sales, there is an entry fee of £10 per script (£5 for NPS members). All entries must be anonymous. You can enter as many scripts as you like. The more the merrier and international entries are very welcome. We perform plays from all over the world and our judges will be delighted to read your submissions.”
