Our Music DNA: Nashville’s The War and Treaty Discuss Inspirations Ahead of UK Tour Dates

Ahead of their upcoming UK & European tour dates, powerhouse vocal duo The War And Treaty have signed their first major record deal with Universal Music Group Nashville.

The husband-and-wife team of Michael Trotter Jr. and Tanya Trotter are recording now, with new music expected later this year.  The news follows The War And Treaty’s recent Americana Honors nomination for “Duo/Group of the Year” and honouring Ray Charles with a performance of his iconic track, “You Don’t Know Me,” during the late singer’s induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame.

The award-winning Nashville-based band will make their Glastonbury Festival debut this summer when they perform on Field Of Avalon Stage on June 24th. Their Glastonbury appearance will come at the end of the husband-and-wife duo’s debut UK & Irish tour, which includes a date at Bristol’s Thekla on June 13.

Here, The War and Treaty share their music inspirations with Andy Howells.

What was the first song that made an impact on you?

MICHAEL: Unforgettable by Nat King Cole.

TANYA: Move Mountains by Rev Clay Evans. It was the first song I sang in church.

What was the first single you bought?

TANYA: Ella Fitzgerald A Tisket A Tasket

MICHAEL: Ray Charles Bye Bye Love

What was the first album you owned?

TANYA: Ella Fitzgerald at the Shrine

MICHAEL: Ray Charles Modern Sounds of Country Western Music

What’s your constant go to track?

TANYA: Anything Ella lol!

MICHAEL: Sam Cooke A Change Gonna Come

What’s your constant go to album?

TANYA: I don’t have one really. I love music so much I just go to it when I’m feeling a kind of way.

MICHAEL: I actually go to some friends of mine as of lately. The Punch Brothers Antifogmatic. It soothes me.

Who’s your latest music discovery?

MICHAEL: Adia Victoria. She’s so unchained! I love her.

TANYA: Olivia Rodrigo. I think she’s awesome

What’s your own track that best defines you as an artist?

TANYA: Are You Ready To Love Me from our album Healing Tide. It says everything I’d say and asks every question I asked Michael when we started dating.

MICHAEL: Five More Minutes. It’s a whole story about the creation of that song. Actually, it sums up our life together. I don’t care how much time I spend with Tanya I always need just five more minutes of her.

Can you tell us about your forthcoming album?

MICHAEL: All we can say is that it’s coming. Stay tuned!!!
