Old Time Americana from Hannah Read & Michael Starkey at Newport’s Maindee Library

Musicians Hannah Read and Michael Starkey are to perform a sublime evening of Old Time Americana at Newport’s Maindee Library on October 14 at 7pm.

Both Hannah and Michael have a kindred spirit. Scottish-born Hannah Read has been Brooklyn-based for some time, the plan to immerse herself in old time string band traditions. Hannah wants her fiddle playing to step back from the swirling and swooping virtuosity of her homeland to find a more homespun earthiness.  Meanwhile, Michael Starkey is a banjo player from Edinburgh has a similar aim; to cut back the excess, to reveal the pure core of melody intrinsic to a tune.

Hannah Read and Michael Starkey are to play Maindee Library, Newport on October 14.

Llyfrgell Maindee LIbrary has been 100% volunteer run since 2015 and is one of Newport’s ongoing success stories, hosting sessions, events, classes and, yes, book borrowing as well. The library acoustics are great for the sublime musicianship of the likes of Hannah and Michael, plus there is also a Bar, nibbles, and a warm welcome at the event.

Arts Council of Wales Night Out Scheme are supporting this event.
