Sherman Theatre and Theatr Iolo Fly into Christmas with Peter Pan

A cast of actor-musicians has been confirmed for Sherman Theatre’s 50th birthday Christmas production, Peter Pan (27 Nov 2023 – 6 Jan 2024), a co-production with children’s theatre company Theatr Iolo featuring flying sequences devised by NoFit State Circus, the UK’s leading large-scale contemporary circus company.

Catherine Dyson’s new play with songs based on J.M. Barrie’s timeless tale follows the classic story from Wendy rather than the title character’s perspective. It is directed by Theatr Iolo’s Artistic Director Lee Lyford.

When Wendy meets Peter Pan, she escapes to magical Neverland – a world of fairies, mermaids, and a pirate pursued by a crocodile.

It’s a land where you’re free to play, to have adventures, to fly and sing. But she also discovers a new group of children to look after – a tribe of Lost Boys who are looking for a mother.

Wendy must decide whether to stay in Neverland, or to return home to real life.

Lee Lyford said: “Sherman Theatre have a wonderful reputation for creating magical Christmas shows, so it’s an honour for Theatr Iolo to be co-producing this year’s show in the main house. Catherine Dyson’s version of this well-loved story will transport audiences to a world where anything can happen; where children are only limited by what they can dream up.

“For me, the most wonderful thing about theatre is its power to speak to the hearts and minds of children and young people. Peter Pan has captured the imagination of generation after generation, and I can’t wait to work with such an outstanding team of cast and creatives on this truly memorable Christmas show.”

The cast for Peter Pan includes; Owen Alun, Emily Burnett, Rebecca Hayes, Rebecca Killick, Kevin McIntosh, Peter Mooney, Alex Murdoch, Lynwen Haf Roberts and Keiron Self in his ninth Sherman Christmas production.

Joining Director Lee Lyford in the creative team are Designer Rachael Canning, Composer & Lyricist Gwyneth Herbert, Lighting Designer Ceri James (celebrating 25 years since his first design for Sherman Theatre), Musical Director Lynwen Haf Roberts and Sound Designer Ian Barnard.

Over the past 50 years, Christmas productions made at Sherman Theatre have introduced generations of children from across South Wales to the magic of theatre – always with a twist. In its 50th birthday year, the company is co-producing Peter Pan alongside a brand new, touring production of Hansel and Gretel (in English) and Hansel a Gretel (in Welsh).

Peter Pan includes Relaxed, Audio Described, Captioned and BSL Interpreted Performances and is recommended for children aged 7+ and their families. Running time: 2 hours plus an interval

Peter Pan is presented by arrangement with Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity and Concord Theatricals Ltd. on behalf of Samuel French Ltd. www.concordtheatricals.co.uk For ticket details: www.shermantheatre.co.uk/peter-pan
