Dylan Thomas Classic Under Milk Wood To Play Caldicot Castle

Theatr Silures, continue their Summer 2018 tour of their ever popular production of Under Milk Wood with a performance at Caldicot Castle on Saturday July 7th. The innovative production of the Welsh classic by national hero Dylan Thomas depicts the lives, loves and loss of the colourful characters of the fictional town irreverently named Llareggub.  These characters are drawn from his observations of the people that he came across when he lived in the Welsh coastal towns he loved.

Just five actors take on roles playing the fifty or so townsfolk of Llareggub with a further actor performing as the Voice or the narrator of the piece. Director Adrian Bevan stated that:

“The production is a challenge for the actors to find and create each of the colourful characters, bringing them to life and making them perfectly distinct from one another.”

“This is especially challenging when each of the actors are playing up to ten roles during the space of an hour and a half performance! Our audiences have often commented about how much they enjoy the way we change from one character to another in the acting space”.

The play is a vivid portrait, albeit a heightened one, of South Wales in the post war era and draws on the warmth and sense of community of the people of the time. The action takes place through the course of a day in the life of the town and is at one moment raucously funny and the next full of pathos and yearning giving a real sense of the Welsh word “hiraeth”.

Theatr Silures started their Summer 2018 tour at the beautiful Theatr Soar in Merthyr Tydfil before going on to play outdoor venues around South Wales. The next performance is Caldicot Castle on Saturday 7th July.  The performance starts at 6.00pm although doors open at 5.00pm for picnics. They are then taking the production home to Dylan’s birthplace, Swansea where they will play for a week at the Clyne Farm Centre overlooking the sweep of Swansea Bay and the Mumbles.

They have already enjoyed great success on their Summer 2018 tour with appreciative audiences. Please see some of the audience feedback:
