Throwback Thursday: The Sunshine Boys, New Theatre, Cardiff (November 1976)

This week’s Throwback Thursday takes a look at Neil Simon’s The Sunshine Boys which played Cardiff’s New Theatre between November 9 -20 1976 and starred Ryan Davies and Bill Owen.

Neil Simon’s The Sunshine Boys follows an attempt by a theatrical agent to re-unite his elderly uncle, a former vaudeville star, with his long-time stage partner for a television reunion.

Despite the duo’s celebrated reputation, the two old men have not spoken in over a decade and as well as reimagining a sketch, both must work out their disagreements before returning to the public eye.

The Sunshine Boys starred Wales own Ryan Davies (a versatile entertainer remembered for his comedy partnership with Ronnie Williams) and Bill Owen (Compo in Last of The Summer Wine).

The show was a major success for Ryan, but tragically he died only months later in April 1977 following an asthma attack at the age of 40.
